The Revival of the Jelly Purse fad from the 80's
Here's my story! A chance encounter. After suffering a devastating fire at my facility, I was forced to subcontract out the manufacturing of some of my products to another job shop. It was there that I met the original manufacturer of the jelly purses from the 80's. I was already on Etsy and he asked me if I would be interested in helping him promote the line again. I said sure. It was easy enough to post a listing.
Then the pandemic hit and a chance posting of an Easter Basket by a customer made the line take off almost overnight. One of the owners of the job shop passed away and the other owner then decided to close down the business and offered me a chance to purchase the tooling. So I did.
That decision began a new chapter. Now I had the challenge of finding another job shop to manufacture my own product line as well as the jelly purses. Was it a struggle? You bet. Is it still a struggle? You bet. Is it worth it? Well that depends on what day you ask me.
Being a solopreneur requires perseverance, some luck and a lot of risk taking. Overseas competition, the current economy, different marketing techniques and learning new technology that I am unfamiliar with has taken a toll, but I'm still here. Thinking outside the box and trying to learn new skills while maintaining my other business is a slow process.
That's life as a solopreneur. It's not much different than others working for themselves but for those of us who take the leap, the benefits outweigh the struggles. So take that risk and believe in yourself.
